Spain got a big shock in the qualifiers when they were forced into a playoff match against Slovakia to gain a place at the 2006 World Cup finals. It seems that someone forgot to tell Serbia and Montenegro the script and so Spain finished second in their group. Although undefeated it was the amount of draws they'd had that cost them an automatic spot in Germany.
Spain are another team that never quite fulfill their potential having got only as far as the quarter-finals in four of their eleven visits to the finals. 1950 saw them finish in fourth place but the competition was structured differently then with no knockout phase.
They have a wealth of stars at their disposal like Raul Gonzalez, Fernando Morientes, Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia, Asier del Horno, and the list goes on.
