Saudi Arabia is one of many teams at the 2006 World Cup that favour foreign coaches and Argentinian Gabriel Calderon would have hoped to take them further than best effort so far, the second round at their first World Cup. It wasn't to be, and while he secured them a place in Germany, recent poor performances at the West Asian Games saw him being replaced by Brazilian Marcos Paqueta.
They qualified comfortably going undefeated in 12 qualifiers and beating 2002 semi-finalists Korea Republic twice. They play with an attacking style and a balance of young talent and experienced players, with Calderon recalling veteran striker Al Jaber to the squad after two years out. The 34 year old Al Jaber proved his worth by scoring three goals in their final qualifying round.
Group H will be tough but not insurmountable and Saudi Arabia will hope they can do better than one draw and six defeats in their last two World Cup appearances. [Latest Saudi Arabia Squad News]
