Japan showed their quality by being the first team to secure a place for Germany 2006, making this their third successive finals. With Brazilian legend Zico as their coach they finished their final qualifying group with 15 points out of 18, although at times they rode their luck.
Japan's strength seems to lie in their midfield players with the likes of Hidetoshi Nakata, hailed as Japan's best ever player, and Shunsuke Nakamura directing the play, but they lack the attacking prowess needed to get past the World's best teams.
Each of their World Cup final appearances has seem them progress further into the competition and maybe they can exceed 2002. Group F will be tough though and if they can survive that then anything is possible. [Latest Japan Squad News]
