Finishing ahead of Nigeria in their African qualifying group has brought Angola to their first ever Fifa World Cup. This is their sixth qualifying attempt beginning in the 1984 qualifiers for Mexico 86.
Angola can count themselves lucky to be going to Germany having lost the first leg of a preliminary match to Chad 3-1, leading to the dismissal of their Brazilian coach Ismael Kurtz. Their captain Akwa eventually led them to a 2-0 victory in the return leg taking them onto the group stage. From then on their home games proved to be the key to success as The Cidadela ground in Luanda became a stronghold against the other visiting teams in their group.
Angola don't have the stars in their squad that a lot of the other World Cup teams can boast but they have a united team and will go to Germany to enjoy themselves and show that Angola and African nations in general have moved on in world football. [Latest Angola Squad News]
