The newly built Leipzig Zentralstadion was commissioned directly for the 2006 World Cup, and at a cost of € 90.6m was completed in December 2003.
The new arena replaces the 'old' Zentralstadion built in 1956 and when opened had the highest capacity for a stadium in Germany at 100,000. The older walls have become the outer boundary of the new ground with bridges connecting both parts.
Like the other newly built stadiums for Germany, this one features the best in stadium lighting integrated into its striking roof, and an aurally-impressive PA system. Particular attention has been paid to spectator safety with the stadium using an innovative emergency evacuation system.
