2006 Fifa World Cup Stadiums - Hamburg

Hamburg World Cup Stadium

This new stadium is another in Germany to be given a five-star rating by UEFA, ranking it amongst the best in Europe. It saw its first match, Germany versus Greece, played in 2000.

Work began in 1998 with the old stadium, Volksparkstadion, being demolished in stages. The function rooms, VIP and media areas were completely redesigned, along with the pitch being rotated and the stands reconstructed, leaving all spectator areas covered from the elements.

This is the third stadium to be built on the site and is home to Hamburg SV, the only club to play at the highest level of the Bundesliga since it began 42 years ago.
