2006 Fifa World Cup Stadiums - Gelsenkirchen

This new stadium was completed in 2001 and was assigned five-star status for stadiums by UEFA. In fact it was thought of so highly comments were made that it might even qualify as a 'Six-star stadium'. With facilities like a removable playing surface, giant video cube, a retractable roof and electronic admission controls, it's easy to understand the praise its design has received.

At a cost of € 191 million the Gelsenkirchen World Cup stadium was financed entirely through private capital and made no burden on the German public's pockets.

Schalke 04 play their home games at the stadium, and with over 150 events staged it has already attracted over 8 million spectators.
