Although effectively replacing the old Müngersdorfer stadium, the new World Cup stadium for Cologne was completely reconstructed one stand at a time so the ground could continue to function, eventually completing the project in the Spring of 2004.
The stadium is home to 1. FC Cologne and its original ground was sited in 1923. The stadium's museum showcases the club's long history, which has seen some of Germany's favourites play there like Toni Schumacher and Thomas Hässler.
Cologne were desperate not to lose out on being one of the World Cup host cities as they missed out on the 1974 World Cup finals, and although they faced stiff competition again, the completion of this impressive € 119 million project brought relief as they achieved that all-important place.
