32 years ago Germany hosted the Fifa World Cup and now in June 2006 Germany will host 32 football teams all competing to be the best national football team in the world. Brazil will once again go into the competition as favourites but as recent World Cups have shown many so-called 'minnow' teams are stronger than ever and have players who play at the highest level around the world. Nothing can be taken for granted and once the competition reaches the knockout stages then anything is possible.
The draw for the World Cup competition took place on 9th December 2005, placing the 32 teams into 8 cup groups of 4 teams. 12 cities will host the 2006 Fifa World Cup: Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hanover, Kaiserslautern, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg, and Stuttgart.
Traditionally each competition has had an official mascot and Germany 2006 will feature it's very own in the form of GOLEO VI the lion (the 'King of Parties') and his companion Pille the talking football. GOLEO VI became mascot after impressing the mascot jury, headed by Franz Beckenbauer, and was announced to the world on 13th November 2004.
In television terms the Fifa World Cup is number one when it comes to viewing figures.
